  • 1. Healthy Start Advocacy Campaign
    This advocacy campaign (2015-2019) aims to provide evidence that access to clean water for hygiene can lower infant mortality. In part through a variety of resources available on the Healthy Start website, WaterAid gives guidance on pressing for clean water and sanitation in clinics with staff trained in hygiene practices in an effort to support: advocacy for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) standards in international and national health and nutrition initiatives; commitment of healthcare workers to including good hygiene practice and promotion in their professional training, plans, and actions; monitoring and assessment of progress towards universal health coverage, including data on the availability of WASH services at health care facility and household levels; and advocacy for inclusion in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of a dedicated goal for water and sanitation, with targets for universal WASH access by 2030.
  • 2. Magic Porthole
    This multimedia, multifaceted communication initiative is an effort by Horizon International to promote protection of coral reefs while providing education about the coral reef, its inhabitants, and the water environment. Centring around a website, as well as printed playing cards and other materials, Magic Porthole is designed to engage children and adults in entertaining ways while challenging them to make discoveries about the world of coral reefs and other ocean life. Another goal is to encourage them to take action to help save these natural resources – from choices of seafood to eat, to reducing global climate change.
  • 3. Indignadas (Outraged Women)
    Indignadas is part of the artist Maria Maria Acha-Kutscher’s Women Working for Women project, which consists of a visual record of the participation of women in global public protests since 2011. Maria Maria says: “…I turn photographs of the protests, from either the media or the public, into pop art style drawings….By transforming photographs into drawings, I give them the supposed ‘timelessness’ of art….I want the series to serve as a memory bank that shows future generations that social changes throughout history were made by women and men together. I also print my drawings onto large format tarps to hang from facades and balconies, and exhibit the work in public spaces.” Indignadas has been exhibited from the balconies of artist’s houses in Madrid, Spain; in the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Santander y Cantabria; and at the University of Alicante….Its most recent exhibition was at the Art Center, Casa Vecina, in Mexico City.
  • 4. DRC Speaks
    In September 2010, Mobile Accord sent more than 4 million weekly SMS (text) messages asking Congolese to take part in the largest mobile polling ever conducted, asking for their input on the current situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and their ideas for change. With mobile GeoPoll technology, the more than 1.2 million responses allowed the Congolese people to tell the world their thoughts, opinions, and hopes for a better Congo. According to organisers, “the messages were astounding. They were raw, and at times horrifying. They are the authentic voices from the heart of one of the most deadly conflicts on earth.”
  • 5. VILAJ Global – Global Village
    Following Haiti’s 2010 earthquake, in 2011, VOCES and Proyecto Solidario por la Infancia worked through the VILAJ programme (which in Creole means village) to create a permanent space for the centre “The Dream of Childhood” in the town of Leogane. The centre uses theatre workshops, music, singing, and broadcast of a child-created radio programme, Radio Verbal. Using the bases of culture, art, and creativity, the children participate in discussing issues related to children and adolescents, using as a reference the respect for, promotion of, and dissemination of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), such as through festival celebrations that include CRC messages.

  • 6. Can Mass Media Interventions Reduce Child Mortality?
    by Roy Head, Joanna Murray, Sophie Sarrassat, Will Snell, Nicolas Meda, Moctar Ouedraogo, Laurent Deboise, and Simon Cousens
    “Our own experience, based on 20 years of delivering mass media campaigns, is that substantial behaviour change is possible when campaigns are broadcast with sufficient intensity.” The authors outline an approach to implementing and evaluating mass media campaigns that have been developed to combat child mortality – as well as to garnering funding to support these campaigns. It is Development Media International (DMI’s) Saturation+ approach, which is based on “saturation, science, and stories.” In an effort to “measure rigorously, using a cluster-randomised design, how many lives mass media can save in a low-income country, and at what cost”, the authors are undertaking a 35-month trial in Burkina Faso that involves broadcasting messages in 7 intervention areas using local FM radio stations with limited range without leaking into the 7 control areas. The methodology is described in detail. Full trial results are expected in 2016. [Feb 2015]
  • 7. Citizen Participation and Technology: An NDI Study
    Does the use of technology in participatory programmes amplify citizen voices and increase government responsiveness and accountability? The United States (US)-based National Democratic Institute (NDI) explains its theory of change, which posits that, while each one of the 3 democratic dimensions (citizen voice, political space, and government accountability) is essential, an underlying interrelationship is necessary to ensure democratic governance. Case studies were conducted to explore programmes in Burma, Mexico, Uganda, Egypt, Ghana, and Peru, as well as a global project, OpeningParliament.org. One finding: “Technology can be used to readily create spaces and opportunities for citizens to express their voices, but making these voices politically stronger and the spaces more meaningful is a harder challenge that is political and not technological in nature…” [May 2014]
  • 8. Prevention of and Response to Gender-Based Violence in Two Provinces of Burundi

    “[O]verall, results indicate that services for GBV survivors and gender-equitable norms in the community improved.” The RESPOND Project’s training, adapted from Engender Health’s Men As Partners (MAP) curriculum, reached providers, community leaders, and male community members. To further strengthen institutional linkages and leadership around gender-based violence (GBV), the project supported a number of meetings and forums, as well as health facility site visits for community leaders. An end-of-project assessment at the health care facility level found, for example, that “the percentage of facility managers who felt that their providers have the knowledge and skills needed to provide holistic care for GBV rose from less than one-quarter at baseline to 100% at endline” and “their knowledge about the management and care of GBV survivors improved following the training, with the average score rising from 38% to 57%.” [Aug 2014]
  • 9. Desk Review and Qualitative Assessment of Case Management Social and Behavior Change Communication Strategies in Four Countries: Ethiopia, Rwanda, Senegal and Zambia

    This Health Communication Capacity Collaborative (HC3) desk review was undertaken in 2014 to better understand: 1) failure to use standard social and behaviour change communication (SBCC) malaria indicators in project design and evaluation and 2) a lack of focus on service providers as the focus audience of SBCC interventions. The SBCC approach described includes: “a formative assessment, which identifies the important barriers and motivators to behavior change, followed by the design and implementation of a comprehensive set of interventions to support and encourage positive behaviors.” Evidence of impact was available in several studies that showed impact of SBCC interventions on malaria case management and child mortality and on changes in care-seeking behaviour, and uptake of artemisinin-combination therapy (ACT). [May 2015]
  • 10. Final Evaluation: Radio for Peacebuilding Africa
    “From the end of Phase II to the end of Phase III, the number of subscribers from African countries registered a sharp 140% increase.” This is one of the findings from this evaluation of the third phase of Search for Common Ground (SFCG)’s web-based platform created as part of the Radio for Peacebuilding Africa (RFPA) project, which ran from 2003 until 2013 in 8 countries. The evaluation discusses how the web-based platform is a useful tool for journalists, particularly among African members, noting that the “frequency of use of the website demonstrates continuous and renewed interest.” The assessment found that resources such as guidebooks and training manuals are the most popular knowledge and management products, followed by the newsletter, which is “appreciated by most recipients, mostly as a grant, scholarship or training resource.” [Sep 2013]

Now Available Online! Research Findings: Understanding Attitudes to Polio Vaccination and Immunisation in Northern Nigeria
The CI coordinated a research team under the auspices of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) of Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health in an effort to provide an in-depth understanding of the underlying family- and community-based issues that influence Nigerians’ attitudes towards immunisation in the northern states of Bauchi, Kano and Sokoto. Though the research focused on polio vaccination and routine immunisation (RI), it also offers insight into how household demand operates across a range of health and development issues.

The resulting report – “Perceptions of Influence: Understanding Attitudes to Polio Vaccination and Immunisation in Northern Nigeria” – and its annexes are now available, here:

  • 13. Positive Deviance Postcast
    In this podcast, Arvind Singhal explores the way in which a very personal experience led to his engagement with the positive deviance (PD) approach to social, organisational, and individual behaviour change. The norm was that babies like his son, born prematurely and underweight, are typically pinned down while they are getting ready for pre-operation (pre-op) as the anesthesiologist tries to find a vein on such a tiny arm. But one paediatric anesthesiologist, he recalls, had a different approach: She was practising PD. Her pre-op strategy was to ask for permission to hold the baby, which comforted and calmed him and his parents. [Nov 2014]
  • 14. Assessing Information and Communication Needs: A Quick and Easy Guide for Those Working in Humanitarian Response
    This guide contains tools to assess the information and communication needs of disaster-affected communities. “Five key questions are suggested, including explanations of why these questions should be asked, and how agencies could act on this data to improve communication in humanitarian response.” It also includes a “Pocket Guide”, which is designed for field practitioners and can be printed on one double-sided sheet of paper. Developers of the guide include Communicating with Disaster-Affected Communities (CDAC) Network Member agencies and the Assessment Capacities Project (ACAPS). [May 2014]
  • 15. Save the Children: Community Health Worker Training
    This 22-minute-long video-based training resource was created for Save the Children’s Community Based Distributors (CBDs) and Community Health Workers (CHWs) in South Sudan in an effort to build capacity to properly fill out treatment registers when they are administering medication to children in their communities who may be suffering from malaria, pneumonia, or diarrhoea. [Jul 2014]
