EMS-SCS
On July 13-22 2021, the Laboratory for Social and Cognitive Informatics housed at the St. Petersburg campus of the Higher School of Economics will host an international summer school in experimental methods and simulation for social and cognitive sciences. The Summer School will be held in a mixed,  online/offline format, designed to provide a full learning experience for students attending virtually and physically alike.

The school will bring together a strong international lineup of academics with a track record of excellence in experimentation and agent-based modeling (ABM) in fields as diverse as cognitive and social psychology, sociology, media studies, and psycholinguistics. The program will include courses and workshops aiming at both enhancing students’ conceptual understanding of the foundations of experimental research, and equipping them with hands-on experience in designing and executing experiments of their own.

  • Maximilian Rabe, Research Assistant in Experimental and Biological Psychology, University of Potsdam, Germany. Contrast analysis of experimental data with regression modeling: A tutorial on hypr R package.
  • Philipp Chapkovski, Research Fellow at International Laboratory for Experimental and Behavioral Economics, Higher School of Economics, Russia. An online workshop on behavioral experiments with the oTree programming tool.

Eligibility
The program is aimed at scholars from a broad range of social and cognitive sciences who are looking to acquire knowledge and skills in experimental research.
Participation requires fluency in English, the working language of the School, and a command of basic principles of quantitative social science research.

We welcome academic and industry research professionals at any career stage. Applications from doctoral students will also be considered.

Please note that hands-on workshops may have individual coding prerequisites. Participation in the (offline-only) eye tracker tutorial requires proficiency with R, and those taking the PsychoPy & Pavlovia tutorial are expected to be familiar with Python. The course schedule will be optimized to accommodate learners located in the time zones spanning London to Beijing. Please consult the schedule in order to determine the feasibility of attendance considering your location.
