Dr. Eric McLuhan, 1942-2018

Dear MEA members,

On behalf of media ecologists everywhere, we mourn the loss of Dr. Eric McLuhan (January 19, 1942 – May 18, 2018). Dr. McLuhan passed away in Bogotá, Columbia, following a visit to Universidad de La Sabana, where he delivered a keynote address in conjunction with the launch of La Sabana’s new PhD program in Communication, which is based on the media ecology perspective.

Eric McLuhan was an integral part of our association – an important contributor to media ecology scholarship, a sparkling presence at our conventions, on our email list, and in the pages of EME as well as on its editorial board. We offer our deep condolences to his family.

He received his BSc in Communications from Wisconsin State University in 1972, and his MA and PhD in English Literature from the University of Dallas in 1980 and 1982. As a scholar of no small achievement, he had a substantial record of publication and made significant contributions to a variety of fields, including communication, English/literary studies, psychology, rhetoric, philosophy, religious studies, and media studies. In 2007, he received the Neil Postman Award for Career Achievement in Public Intellectual Activity from the Media Ecology Association. In 2011, the University of St. Michael’s College in Toronto, Canada awarded him an L.L.D. of Sacred Letters. He was a featured speaker at several Media Ecology Association conventions, including our inaugural meeting in 2000 at Fordham University in New York, our 8th annual meeting at Monterrey Tech in Mexico City in 2007, and last year’s 18th annual convention at Saint Mary’s College of California.

An internationally known and award-winning speaker and lecturer, Eric McLuhan had over 40 years of teaching experience in a broad array of subjects, including literature, perception, high-speed reading techniques, communication theory, media, culture, Egyptology, and the nature and structure of renaissances. His research and thinking have been published in books, magazines, and journals since 1964, including three seminal co-authored books: Laws of Media: The New Science (1990), Media and Formal Cause (2011), and Theories of Communication (2011).

A special plenary session dedicated to Eric McLuhan is being planned for the upcoming MEA convention to be held June 21-24, 2018, at the University of Maine in Orono, Maine. In addition, in the coming year a special issue of Explorations in Media Ecology will be devoted to Eric McLuhan.

Messages of condolences and appreciation to Eric McLuhan, our colleague and dear friend, can be found in the list archive of the MEA mailing list. In order to view the archive, which is open to subscribers only, please subscribebeforehand.

Sincerely, and with heavy hearts,

The Executive Board of the Media Ecology Association
