    • 1. Inoculating the Public against Misinformation about Climate Change
      by Sander van der Linden, Anthony Leiserowitz, Seth Rosenthal, and Edward Maibach
      This research investigated if and how public understanding of the scientific consensus on human-caused climate change can be protected (“inoculated”) against real-world misinformation. Practically, the findings suggest that, “when possible, communicating the scientific consensus on human-caused climate change should be accompanied by information that forewarns the public that politically or economically motivated actors may seek to undermine the findings of climate science.” [Jan 2017]
    • 2. The Influence of Climate Change Efficacy Messages and Efficacy Beliefs on Intended Political Participation
      by P. Sol Hart and Lauren Feldman
      This study examines one element that influences whether or not members of the public engage in political action around issues such as climate change: their sense of efficacy. The authors suggest that scant research has investigated how efficacy information as a variable in media messages may influence perceptions of efficacy and political action in the context of climate change. Here, they intend to address this research gap. [Aug 2016]
    • 3. Faith and Climate Change: A Guide to Talking with the Five Major Faiths
      by George Marshall
      This guide is intended to provide practical tips for climate communicators, both inside and outside faith communities, about what language works well and what language might pose an obstacle for communicating with any specific faith group. In April 2015, GreenFaith asked Climate Outreach to develop and test language around climate change that could mobilise activity across 5 main faith groups: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism in the run-up to the 2015 world climate conference in Paris, France.       by Duncan Green
      Intended for activists, campaigners, development practitioners, lobbyists, entrepreneurs, individuals, and organisations who want to change the world, the book offers a framework for understanding social change by focusing on power analysis and systemic understanding – known as the “power and systems approach”. One case study focuses on the December Paris Agreement on climate change. [2016]
    • 5. The Uncertainty Handbook
      by Adam Corner, Stephan Lewandowsky, Mary Philips, and Olga Roberts
      This handbook, a collaboration between Climate Outreach and University of Bristol, outlines 12 practical principles for smarter communication about climate change uncertainties. The issue, according to the handbook’s creators, is that, although public debate often cites uncertainty as a reason to delay policy action, the reality is very different. [2015]

  • 6. Dominant Visual Frames in Climate Change News Stories: Implications for Formative Evaluation in Climate Change Campaigns

    The idea behind this study of 15 dominant visual frames from randomly selected climate change news (print) articles in the United States (US) is that, because visual imagery is meant to serve a variety of functions in communication campaigns (e.g., to draw attention, stimulate emotional response, enhance memorability, cue prior knowledge and attitudes, or represent complex or abstract concepts), formative evaluation should explicitly assess whether or not selected imagery fulfills its intended purposes.   • 7. Klima 101: A Climate Change Guidebook for Philippine Journalists
    by Imelda Visaya-Abaño, Rex L. Navarro, and Rosa T. Perez
    This guidebook aims to help journalists and editors communicate by providing a clear idea of the nature of climate change, what types of data and information journalists need to write or produce a story, how to report climate issues effectively, and how to influence decision-making in the process, as well as generate public debate and action. It represents a joint effort on the part of CCAFS in Southeast Asia (CCAFS SEA), with the Department of Agriculture, the Philippine Network of Environmental Journalists (PNEJ), and the Philippine Agricultural Journalists (PAJ). It was produced to provide a quick reference for journalists on what are often complex climate governance issues and includes examples of news features that speak to these issues, highlighting why these stories work.     • 9. Child-Centred Climate Resilience: Case Studies from the Philippines and Vietnam
      by Corinne Schoch and Pia Treichel
      This report outlines the practical lessons learned by Plan International and Save the Children about their rights-based, participation approach to climate change: child-centred community-based adaptation (CC-CBA). Through case studies of ethnic minorities in the central mountains of Vietnam and typhoon-affected communities in the Philippines, the report explores the use of creative participatory tools to help children identify and prioritise issues that most affect them. Through storytelling, interactive drama, dance, or more focused discussions and plenary sessions, children and young people can gain an understanding of climate change and be empowered to catalyse action at home, at school, and in the community.     • 10. Participatory Planning for Climate Compatible Development in Maputo, Mozambique (Planeamento Participativo para o Desenvolvimento Compatível com o Clima em Maputo, Moçambique)
      by Vanesa Castán Broto, Jonathan Ensor, Emily Boyd, Charlotte Allen, Carlos Seventine, and Domingos Augusto Macucule
      This practitioners’ handbook highlights the experience of a pilot project in Maputo, Mozambique, which engaged with local residents in a neighbourhood to explore possible local responses to climate change. The project, funded by the Climate Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) and delivered by a consortium of local and international partners, used the Participatory Action Planning methodology to organise communities and develop mechanisms for institutional development through partnerships.     • 11. USAID Adaptation Community Meeting: Does Climate Change Need Behavior Change?
      This webinar emerges from an October 20 2016 Adaptation Community Meeting on behavioural approaches to building community resilience to climate change: the capacity of a community to embrace change by coping, adapting, and prospering with regard to stresses and disturbances that are a result of unpredictable climate change impacts. The event was organised by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)’s Climate Change Adaptation, Thought Leadership, and Assessments (ATLAS) project.

It provides a framework in which to examine concrete examples of gender-responsive approaches and how they can lead to greater adaptation impact. [Oct 2016]
    • 15. 10 Things to Know: Gender Equality and Achieving Climate Goals

      This report provides a synthesis of findings from research conducted in Peru, India, and Kenya into how gender approaches contribute to climate compatible development. The objective is to contribute new evidence to this arena and provide insights that will help policymakers and practitioners to foster more inclusive climate and development interventions. The project was carried out by Practical Action Consulting with support from the Institute of Development Studies and the CDKN. [2016]
    • 16. Gender Approaches in Climate Compatible Development: Lessons from India

      This case study explores the advantages and challenges of integrating gender dimensions into climate compatible development strategies through an examination of the Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network (ACCCRN) project. One finding: “Support and encouragement by facilitators, as well as attempts to build awareness amongst men and other decision-makers about how women are affected by climate change, helped a number of women to speak out, gain awareness and confidence and contribute to local planning processes.” [May 2016]
    • 17. BRACED Gender and Resilience Toolkit
      Developed as part of the Building Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Extremes and Disasters (BRACED) programme, this toolkit consists of a set of 3 participatory tools that are designed to be used to ensure that programmes to build resilience and adaptation to climate extremes and disasters are taking gender issues into account.     • 18. Pacific Gender and Climate Change Toolkit
      Grounded in the belief that gender equality is central to achieving a sustainable and resilient future in the Pacific islands region, this toolkit from UN Women is designed to support climate change practitioners working in national governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and regional and international organisations in their efforts to integrate gender into all aspects of policy, programming, and project work.     • 19. Gender Responsive National Communications Toolkit

      This toolkit from the UNDP was created “to strengthen the capacity of national government staff and assist them in integrating gender equality into the development of National Communications (NCs).” As described in the toolkit, NCs are progress reports by signatories of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (1994). NC reporting processes can be an “entry point for training, awareness-raising and capacity-building efforts. Preparation of reports can also influence other, ongoing climate change planning and policymaking processes.” [Dec 2015]
    • 20. Gender and Forests: Climate Change, Tenure, Value Chains and Emerging Issues
      by Carol J. Pierce Colfer, Bimbika Sijapati Basnett, and Marlène Elias, eds.
      This book presents local case studies and global comparative studies, with a particular focus on tropical forests and gender connected through a conceptual framework (The Gender Box) that incorporates dynamics of time and space in addressing themes of climate change, value chains, and land tenure.
