  • 1. HC3 Landscaping Summary Report on Zika Coordination and Communication in Four Countries: Honduras, El Salvador, Dominican Republic and Guatemala

    In this report on Zika in 4 Central American countries, the Health Communication Capacity Collaborative (HC3) offers recommendations for improving the social and behaviour change communication (SBCC) response to the virus. One finding: “Countries should take advantage of the NGO [non-governmental organisation] community that has strong links to peri-urban and rural communities. Many of the NGOs use community participation methodologies that empower communities to be proactive in vector control. Bring on more partners who can widen the reach of this community, such as church networks and the private sector, who benefit from a healthy workforce and play a large role in some countries in the tourist industry.” [Jun 2016]
  • 2. Talking Climate Change via Social Media: Communication, Engagement and Behaviour

    This paper proposes an approach for analysing user behaviour towards climate change based on the 5 Doors Theory of behaviour change. The authors suggest that public engagement is currently limited because people do not appreciate the correlation between their individual behaviour and its global impact, underestimating their power to influence climate change. Several campaigns and initiatives have emerged with the aim of involving individuals closely in the solution. The paper applies an analysis approach of identifying 5 behavioural stages based on individuals’ social media contributions to analyse the online behaviour of participants of the Earth Hour 2015 (EH2015) and United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) Twitter movements. Results of this analysis are used to provide guidelines on how to improve communication via these campaigns. [Jun 2016]
  • 3. Using Mobile Voice Technology to Improve the Collection of Food Security Data: WFP’s Mobile Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping

    This case study looks at the United Nations (UN) World Food Programme (WFP)’s use of Mobile Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping (mVAM), a programme that integrates mobile technology, including SMS, Interactive Voice Response (IVR), and live calls, into WFP’s established food security monitoring systems. Although the mVAM tools are best used alongside face-to-face data collection in “mixed-mode” systems, they also enable the collection of data in situations where violence or disease prevent face-to-face surveys from taking place. The mVAM team has documented its learning and achieved proof-of concept for the application of mobile technologies to food security monitoring. mVAM is now operative in 11 countries, with a plan in place for expansion to 30.   • 4. Countering Violent Extremism through Media and Communication Strategies

    This report presents an analysis academic and grey literature relevant to the question: How can media and communications be used to counter identity-based violence (IBV) or violent extremism (VE)? Some of the key findings highlight the need for trust and credibility – the limits of media and communication projects seem evident when they are seen as beholden to or the mouthpiece of a political agenda. Witnessing “someone like me” share a platform with “others unlike me” can encourage positive attitudes around tolerance and understanding of others. Ferguson calls for more research into spontaneous online inter-group dialogues in order to explore why engaging with certain VE narratives can be so appealing and, then, to consider whether there are media- or communication-based solutions that can draw from these lessons. The review illustrates the need for cross-disciplinary engagement and inter-disciplinary research to discourage stigmitisation of Muslims and ! Muslim communities and promote a more diverse research culture. [Mar 2016]
  • 5. The Effectiveness of Disaster Risk Communication: A Systematic Review of Intervention Studies

    The aim of this systematic review is to identify, appraise, and synthesise the findings of studies of the effects of risk communication interventions during 4 stages of the disaster cycle: mitigation and prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. Included in the analysis were 27 studies of risk communication interventions that were implemented in the context of a variety of man-made, natural, and infectious disease disasters around the world. The contexts, interventions, and outcomes were diverse. The effectiveness of the interventions was evaluated by assessing knowledge, behaviour, and incidence of health outcomes (e.g., injuries, deaths). “The major finding for future research from this study is that there is an absence of high-quality robust trials relating to disaster communication that should be remedied.” [Aug 2014]

  • 6. Does Mass-Media Public Communication Campaign Normalize Discussion, Attitude and Behavior about Condom Use among Married Men in India?

    Noting that “condom” is a stigmatised topic in India and that open discussion about its use and promotion is considered inappropriate, this study examines the association between exposure to public service announcements (PSAs) around condoms and discussion, attitudes, and behavioural intentions about condom use among married Indian men by their age and socio-economic status (SES). It explores a communication intervention carried out as part of the “Advocacy and Media” component under the Avahan HIV prevention intervention (2003-2014) using the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) World Service Trust (WST) [now called BBC Media Action] condom normalisation survey data.   • 7. Final Draft Report for Progress Evaluation of SFCG’s Entrepreneurship-Focused Initiatives Programme: “Let’s Do It Project and Legacy for Tomorrow Project”

    This report discusses the evaluation findings of the entrepreneurship components of 2 projects implemented by Search for Common Ground in collaboration with media partners in Rwanda, Burundi, and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since 2011. These are the Let’s Do It project, which focused on empowering youth through the Zamuka television show, Generation Grands Lacs radio programme, and Facebook engagement of audiences for both programmes; and the Legacy for Tomorrow project, which included the Kura Wikorera radio programme to promote entrepreneurship in areas other than agriculture. The evaluation was conducted using a participatory approach with qualitative and quantitative data in order to assess the effectiveness of influencing entrepreneurship/livelihoods outcomes and provide lessons learned and recommendations for future programming.   • 8. Outcomes Mapping Study for Childhood Vaccination Communication: Too Few Concepts Were Measured in Too Many Ways

    Responding to this challenge of measuring the effects of the diversity of communication interventions designed to inform, educate, remind, support, and/or change behaviour around vaccination, this paper presents a map that is designed to catalog the outcomes that have been measured in trials of childhood vaccination communication interventions. The premise is that “[e]ffective communication with parents and communities is critical to addressing vaccine hesitancy and improving global childhood vaccination uptake.” It emerges from research being carried out as part of Communicate to Vaccinate (COMMVAC 2), which is an international project addressing evidence-based communication – e.g., via the development and use of core outcome sets (COSs) – about childhood vaccination in low- and middle-income countries. The paper describes the methods for creating the Trial Outcomes Map, reports the results, and reflects on a number of trends in outcome reporting identified during! this process. [Oct 2015]
  • 9. Changing Gender Norms: Monitoring and Evaluating Programmes and Projects

    This research and practice note focuses on monitoring gender norm change in programmes and projects, outlining key principles for monitoring and evaluating changes. It finds that to understand whether projects and programmes to change discriminatory gender norms affecting adolescent girls are having their intended effect – and to make the necessary changes if they are not – it is important to monitor change (or lack of change) at regular intervals. In addition to being vital to helping individual programmes and projects be as effective as possible, impact monitoring data and evaluations can contribute to the pool of global knowledge on how to change discriminatory gender norms.   • 10. East Los High: Transmedia Edutainment to Promote the Sexual and Reproductive Health of Young Latina/o Americans

    This report presents a programme evaluation of East Los High, a transmedia entertainment–education (edutainment) programme for young Latina/o Americans that embeds educational messages in entertainment narratives across digital platforms to promote sexual and reproductive health. The authors set up the context of this project after a review of transmedia edutainment, including its theoretical foundations in narrative engagement and persuasion. They then offer their analysis of the strategic design elements of East Los High’s season 1 programming, reporting the research methods used for evaluation, along with a discussion of the key findings and implications for designing sexual and reproductive health interventions for Latina/o youths.     From the University of Adelaide, Applied Communication Collaborative Research Unit (ACCRU), this toolkit provides guidance to humanitarian and development organisations in the area of emergency communication strategy design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. It focuses on providing essential emergency warnings, as well as communication that promotes behaviour change, community mobilisation, and action. CHAT is designed to help users to quickly develop a communication for humanitarian action strategy using a range of step-by-step templates and short workshop facilitation guides. CHAT was a collaborative effort among partner organisations, with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) leading the process. [May 2015]
  • 13. Drama for Conflict Transformation Toolkit: Youth Theater for Peace

    Across Kyrgyzstan, youth participants in IREX’s Youth Theater for Peace (YTP) programme, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), are using the Drama for Conflict Transformation (DCT) methodology introduced in this toolkit to create community conversation about conflict issues. The toolkit guides facilitators in creating a custom workshop to introduce youth to the DCT methodology. What were the enabling factors that contributed to the achievements made towards a particular EFA goal in a country? How were expected and unforeseen challenges addressed along the way?
