Public consultations on access to telecoms networks
(3 October 2011) The European Commission has launched two public consultations related to access for alternative operators to the fixed telephone and broadband networks of established operators. The consultations are part of Commission efforts to boost the Single Market for telecoms services by ensuring consistent and coherent approaches to regulating telephone and broadband networks in all Member States.

Digital Agenda: social networks can do much more to protect minors’ privacy – Commission report
(30 September 2011) Only two out of nine social networking sites (Habbo Hotel and Xbox Live) have default settings which make minors’ personal profiles accessible only to their approved list of contacts according to a new round of tests undertaken for the European Commission. However, a majority of sites tested do give youngsters age-appropriate safety information, guidance and/or educational materials specifically targeted at minors and respond to requests for help. Seven sites responded to requests for help, a majority in less than a day.

European Commission officials visit member states to present the Digital Agenda for Europe

From 10 to 14 October, European Commission officials will participate in events organised in France, Romania, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Latvia in order to present to stakeholders and the public the Digital Agenda for Europe. These events will focus on the Digital Single Market, Research and Innovation, ICT for Society, the Global Cities’ Dialogue, Broadband, digital inclusion, Digital Agenda and the youth, eGovernment, eHealth. The visits are part of the Going Local exercise, run by the European Commission for the second year in a row, in order to foster a public dialogue on the Digital Agenda goals.

Smart security technologies (security and respect for private life) are crucial to improving the quality of care and patient comfort, but also in the fight against fraud and rising health costs. Several health smart cards have already emerged in the United States. In Europe, Germany and France are launching new cards.

Global ICT industry: changing landscape? – The future of European ICT R&D

This event is organised by the European Commission’s Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS). The main objectives of the conference are to identify and debate trends in the changing global ICT and ICT R&D landscape, to debate their impact on the EU ICT industry and the consequences for research and innovation location and modes, as well as to discuss implications for ICT R&D and innovation policies in Europe. The Conference will bring together industry representatives, ICT R&D and innovation analysts, and policy makers from Europe, the US and Asia. It is hoped that the conference will contribute to the policy debates on ICT R&D in Europe.The Conference itself is part of a long-term study by IPTS on «R&D in ICT in the European Union», which documents the private and public expenditures in ICT in Europe and worldwide, and provides additional information on aspects such as companies’ R&D expenditures, internationalisation trends or patenting.

Experts’ vision for GEANT 2020 serving a creative knowledge Society
(4 October 2011) The GEANT Expert Group’s report on the 2020 Vision for European Research and Education Networking was delivered today to Neelie Kroes, European Commission Vice-President for the Digital Agenda. The report «Knowledge without Borders: GEANT 2020 as the European Communications Commons» presents the experts’ views on the future of the pan-European research and education network GEANT. It makes specific recommendations to policy makers, funding bodies and the research and education networks community for supporting and expanding knowledge communities, pushing the state-of-the-art in technology and adapting to change both from a governance and funding point of view.

4th European Conference on ICT for Transport Logistics

ICT is the most important enabler and driver of efficiency in transport logistics. The conference will translate results from conceptual research into practical solutions. EURIDICE, Europe’s Intelligent Cargo research flagship project, will showcase, in cooperation with other logistics projects, how ICT can help the sector to increase energy efficiency, reduce lead time and generate cost savings. The traget audience of the conference includes everybody involved in ICT for transport logistics.

Future and Emerging Technologies Information Day on Call 8 of ICT-FP7
11 October 2011 Madrid, Spain
This information day will cover the following strategic objectives of Call 8 + FET Open: Unconventional Computation ; Dynamics of Multi-Scale Complex Systems ; Minimising Energy Consumption of Computing to the Limit ; Coordinating Communities, Identifying new research topics for FET Proactive initiatives and Fostering Networking of National and Regional Research Programmes. A FET project officer will present the content of each one of them, and give special guidance to the goals and type of projects expected. In parallel, the other Scientific Officers will hold bilateral meetings with potential participants (10-15 minutes each), to discuss specific proposal ideas.
