More than 60% of individuals in the EU28 use the internet daily
(18 December 2013) Internet access and use is widespread amongst the EU population. In the 28 EU Member States (EU28), 79% of households had access to the internet in 2013 and 76% had a broadband internet connection, compared with 55% and 42% respectively in 2007. For most individuals in the EU28, using the internet has become a regular activity, with 62% of individuals using it every day or almost every day and a further 10% at least once a week. On the other hand, 21% of individuals reported in 2013 that they have never used the internet, compared with 37% in 2007.

EU industrial leadership gets boost through eight new research partnerships
(17 December 2013) The European Commission has launched eight contractual Public Private Partnerships (cPPPs) of strategic importance for European industry. The partnerships will leverage more than EUR 6 billion of investments to be allocated through calls for proposals under Horizon 2020, the new EU programme for research and innovation.

Commission launches pilot to open up publicly funded research data
(16 December 2013) Valuable information produced by researchers in many EU-funded projects will be shared freely as a result of a Pilot on Open Research Data in Horizon 2020. Researchers in projects participating in the pilot are asked to make the underlying data needed to validate the results presented in scientific publications and other scientific information available for use by other researchers, innovative industries and citizens.

EUR 15 million up for grabs to support ICT entrepreneurship and web startups in first round of Horizon 2020 funding
(16 December 2013) The EU has just launched the first round of applications for its new 7 year research and innovation programme, Horizon 2020. Over EUR 15m is available to transform entrepreneurial culture, give students the confidence, knowhow and support to set up their own businesses and to help promising web startups launch in Europe and go global.

Ambient Assisted Living Joint Programme Delivers on Research Commercialisation
(18 December 2013) The Ambient Assisted Living Joint Programme (AAL JP) was launched in 2008 with the aim of supporting industry, and in particular SMEs, in bringing digital innovative products and services for ageing well to the market. Some 150 projects have been launched since. As the five-year programme, for which half of the funding came from the 7th Research Framework Programme, and the other half from participating Member States’ contributions, is now coming to a successful completion a high level expert group has produced a final evaluation report.
