Featuring 20 young people and 3 organisations and highlighting their perspectives on youth involvement in agriculture using ICTs, the document presents summaries of essays submitted for a 2010 contest. Amongst the recommendations in this assessment, conducted to inform a project working to provide support and services to survivors of sexual violence (SV) which occurred amidst political violence in Guinea: Train providers to offer information on the rights and services available to SV survivors, conduct safety planning with SV survivors through role plays, and develop lists of services for referrals available to SV survivors – sharing these lists with providers during the training. [The RESPOND Project, Jan 2012]
3. Country Case Study: Bangladesh – Support to Media Where Media Freedoms and Rights are Constrained
by Francis Rolt
This document describes the media market in Bangladesh, including 10 years of growth: a large range of reportedly profitable newspapers and satellite TV channels dominated by large corporations; new web-based initiatives going to the village level; and high mobile phone penetration with potential to stimulate public debate and generate change. «There are signs that the tradition of policy decisions being made by the administration without reference to the people, and then passed downwards for implementation, is starting to change.» [BBC Media Action, Aug 2012]

by Selen Durak and Mualla Erkiliç
This article describes a spatial analysis of architecture and inclusive education (the practice of integrating students with disabilities and special educational needs into general education) in a Turkish primary school. Teachers said they wanted to share their experiences of special needs education with architects during school design, building, or renovation in order to close the gap between the Turkish legislation and practice of inclusive education. [Children, Youth and Environments (CYE), Jan 2012]

EXPERIENCES
6. SMS for Life
This public-private partnership draws on mobile phones, SMS technologies, and websites to eliminate antimalarial stock-outs and improve access to essential medicines in sub-Saharan Africa. Healthcare staff located at local public clinics receive automated SMS messages each week that prompt them to check the remaining stock of antimalarial medicines. Using toll-free numbers, staff can reply with an SMS to a central database system providing details of stock levels. Electronic maps are used to provide a geographic overview of medicine stock status and needs. [IBM, Vodafone, Novartis, and the Roll Back Malaria Partnership]
7. Gender Justice Video Advocacy Project
With a plan to create documentaries on woman’s justice issues through local participation, this initiative is producing 6 films highlighting gender issues in armed conflicts, fragile states, and post-conflict environments. For example, «Our Plea» features the testimonies of 2 young women who were abducted by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in the South-Eastern provinces of the Central African Republic (CAR). This video is filmed as a call to action. [Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice and WITNESS]
8. The Rough Season
This audio soap opera seeks to raise awareness on disaster risk among the most vulnerable communities in the English-speaking Caribbean. It features what are meant to be catchy tunes and engaging, culturally appropriate characters. [ARTS-in-ACTION, Centre for Creative and Festival Arts, University of the West Indies (UWI) – with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR), International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies, and Association of Caribbean States (ACS)]
9. Consejo de Redacción (CdR) – The Editorial Board
In July 2012, the organisation launched the «Monitor de Corrupción» (or «Corruption Monitor»), which provides journalists and citizens with a platform to submit reports that will expose and map incidents of corruption in Colombia. The CdR also conducts online debates, discussions, and conversation under the name «Talks with the Masters». It produces materials in print, such as records of its events and pamphlets with recommendations to facilitate investigative journalism. As a tool to facilitate investigation, the CdR designed ZoomOnline, a member-accessible database of public information, compiled from official sources.
10. Pamoja Mtaani (Together in the Hood)
This multi-player computer video game is designed to educate young people in Kenya about HIV prevention. It focuses on 5 key HIV prevention behaviours: delaying sexual debut, abstinence, avoiding multiple partners, correct and consistent condom use, and uptake of voluntary counselling and testing (VCT). Players assume the identity of 1 of 5 characters and then are put into situations where the decisions they make can either put them at risk of contracting HIV or help to prevent it. [Virtual Heroes for Warner Bros Entertainment in partnership with the United States (US) President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)]
