EXPERIENCES
1. Mpilonhle Mobile Health and Education Project
Mpilonhle is using mobile units to provide health information and services and education programmes to rural schools and communities in the province of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa. The programmes, which are based on a participatory learning and skills-building approach, are designed to: help prevent HIV and promote general health; provide medical and social services; and develop computer-based skills and knowledge.
2. ARTICLE 17: A Campaign to End Untouchability
Community correspondents across India are documenting video testimonies of different forms of untouchability – the social practice of ostracising a minority group by segregating them from the mainstream by social custom or legal mandate. The 22 videos produced to date are part of this advocacy effort launched by Video Volunteers.
3. Communicate to Vaccinate (COMMVAC)
This multi-partner research project aims to build research evidence for improving communication about childhood vaccinations with parents and communities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This project combines evidence mapping, conceptual and taxonomy development, priority setting, systematic reviews, and knowledge transfer. To start, COMMVAC is developing a map of provider-parent communication interventions for childhood vaccinations. Ultimately, evidence from the process will be translated into accessible formats and messages for dissemination to LMICs.
4. AMIC Alternative Media Portal (AAMP)
AAMP exists to provide visibility and voice to alternative media organisations and practitioners in Asia and the Pacific. The portal provides a platform to exchange material among alternative media sources, especially community radio stations.
5. The Ashe Company: Edutainment Initiative
The Ashe Company’s social and behaviour change communication methodology is designed to empower Jamaican youth to make their own decisions about living a healthy lifestyle and creating a healthy environment within their communities. The project uses combinations of games, music, dance, and drama productions that engage young people to examine issues in a non-threatening, entertaining, but educational manner while cementing the knowledge through subsequent discussions, workshops, and other one-on-one support interventions and activities.

STRATEGIC THINKING
6. Mapping Digital Media: Turkey
by Asli Tunç and Vehbi Görgulu
This report calls for a host of measures aimed at depoliticising the policy process with respect to digitisation of media, strengthening legislative protections against digital censorship, and enhancing the transparency and accountability of regulatory institutions. [Open Society Foundation, Mar. 2012]
7. Holding Health Workers Accountable: Governance Approaches to Reducing Absenteeism
by Rachel Deussom, Wanda Jaskiewicz, Sarah Dwyer, and Kate Tulenko
This brief explores strategies for addressing absenteeism – defined as chronic, unexcused absence from work – which is described here as adversely affecting health worker productivity, undermining health service quality, and impacting health service demand. It is suggested that reducing absenteeism requires a decentralised approach involving broad stakeholder groups to reinforce accountability mechanisms. [CapacityPlus, IntraHealth International, May 2012]
8. AIDS Accountability Scorecard on Women Report
This resource provides a gender analysis of the government-provided data from a global rating of country responses to AIDS based on the United Nations 2001 Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS and assesses how well governments respond to the specific needs and vulnerabilities of women in the context of the AIDS epidemic. It intends to empower stakeholders at national, regional, and global levels. [AIDS Accountability International, Nov. 2009]
9. Reducing Carbon Emissions through Videoconferencing: An Indian Case Study
by Debendra Kumar Mahalik
Though videoconferencing is a challenging format for motivated engagement, and not all officials are trained to take advantage of it, the document recommends: using the technology more widely in government and private businesses through developing convenient facilities; bringing the conferencing possibilities to personal computers through webcams and services such as Skype; and considering possible regulatory intervention to support its use versus travel for conventional meetings. [Centre for Development Informatics (CDI), University of Manchester, United Kingdom (UK), with the support of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Jan. 2012]
10. Children & Youth Global Strategy for Working with Children and Youth in Transforming Conflict
This document sets out the vision, strategic goals, and core initiatives to guide the work of Search for Common Ground (SFCG) around the world through such activities as expanding and replicating children’s soap operas and development of materials to guide key actors when addressing the issue of child soldiers in conflict zones. [Jan. 2009]
