1.      Loy9
Created by BBC Media Action, Loy9 is designed, made, presented, and marketed mainly by young Cambodians. This edutainment initiative uses various media, including social media, to tell the stories of young people who have contributed to their communities – showing how they can be emulated. This sentiment is summed up in its name, Loy9, which is a slang term of praise among young Cambodians. It is an effort to affirm to young people that they should have their say on issues related to running the country – for instance, they should participate in governance by voting.

2.      Increasing Access and Promoting Integration of the Response to TB/HIV Co-infection
The organisation Vía Libre works in Peru to increase access to and promote integration of the response to tuberculosis (TB)/HIV co-infection through free HIV testing for people affected by TB, as well as capacity-building and advocacy. According to Vía Libre, people affected by TB are stigmatised due to a lack of basic information among the general population on how to prevent TB infection, so the organisation is working to strengthen community organisations and provide training to health care workers and community leaders. The project also advocates for integrated support for patients, including information about side effects and co-infection.

3.      MFarm
MFarm is a Kenyan mobile telephone service using software that links markets and farmers from five major towns in Kenya. Developed by three Kenyan university students, the MFarm website, service, and software were created to help farmers to: check for prices; combine their efforts with other small scale farmers; and purchase input supplies together from manufacturers at cheaper rates.

4.      This Close Campaign
This Rotary International public awareness campaign centres around public service announcements (PSAs) emphasising that Rotary has reached 99% of its goal to eradicate polio. The PSAs encourage the public to support the effort to finish off the final one percent. The campaign’s tagline is: «We’re this close to ending polio.» Visitors to the This Close website may join the leaders who have signed on for the final push to eradicate polio by creating their own version of the PSA and uploading it to the website. Once a person creates an ad, he or she can share it with friends and family through email and social networks.

5.      Journalist Training Project in Vietnam
Sweden’s Institute for Further Education of Journalists (Fojo Media Institute) has been providing mid-career training for Vietnamese journalists since 1998 in cooperation with Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture and Information (MoCI). Goals include: improving professional management, newsroom routines, and cooperation; enhancing journalistic skills of staff; and creating role models for Vietnamese media houses. The programme involves in-house courses, an ethics tour (featuring 2-day seminars on journalist ethics), and various follow-up seminars. There is also a 2-week local radio workshop designed to: provide reporters/editors with live broadcasting skills, improve interview techniques and other journalistic skills, and increase interaction with, and amplify the voices of, grassroots people.

6.      Empowering Women through ICT
From the Swedish Program for ICT in Developing Regions (Spider), this March 2012 publication looks at gender-focused information and communication technology (ICT) projects in the rural regions of the global south that Spider supported (with additional partners) from 2007 until early 2011. The report draws on theories from gender and technology studies in analysing the social and technical impact of the projects on women’s lives. These 5 different projects carried out in 6 different locations used ICT in a way connected with women’s everyday activities in order to demystify the technology. «Success of women-centered projects in general hinges on the ability to ensure that the technology is adapted to suit the women’s reality.»

7.      Advancing Human Rights: Responding to HIV
Published in October 2010, this document presents the findings of a survey conducted by the International HIV/AIDS Alliance amongst their national Linking Organisations and partners. Alliance partners reported implementation actions relevant to the programming standards for human rights in a variety of communication-related forms. One such example is a look at improving access to legal redress for people living with HIV in Kenya. This study looks at the low levels of awareness of laws and legal processes and the need to improve access to legal services among people living with, vulnerable to, and affected by HIV, which resulted in the establishment of a free, mobile legal aid clinic which travels to rural villages and urban slums to provide communities with education about HIV laws, legal advice, referrals to support organisations, and referrals to medical and social services.

8.      Communication: A Responsibility of All Scientists
by David Dickinson
This December 2010 SciDev.Net editorial explores scientists’ responsibility to publicly discuss the social implications of their research. A draft set of guidelines drawn up by the Committee on Freedom and Responsibility in the conduct of Science, of the International Council for Science (ICSU) states that «the science community has an obligation to assist the media, whilst recognizing the independence of both parties.» According to the author of this editorial, «[f]or scientists, this can involve overcoming negative feelings about interacting with journalists… It also means taking the necessary steps to make this interaction work, such as learning to use jargon-free language. Just as importantly, scientific institutions must make the financial and policy commitments required to enable effective communication.»

9.      Factors Affecting Acceptance of Vasectomy in Uttar Pradesh: Insights from Community-Based, Participatory Qualitative Research
This investigation, published in May 2011, from EngenderHealth and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for Communication Programs (JHUCCP), working as RESPOND project partners, is a participatory ethnographic evaluation research (PEER) study conducted in Uttar Pradesh, India. The study finds that communication interventions are needed not only to improve attitudes toward and increase demand for no-scalpel vasectomy (NSV) but also to support the translation of this demand into effective promotion of sterilisation services. «Given the weight that men place on one-to-one/face-to-face communication and the lack of recall and trust associated with mass media, a critical part of any NSV promotion campaign is to identify sterilised men prepared to speak out to other men about their experiences. These men could also be offered training to play a wider role of ‘family planning advisor’ for men…»

Center for International Media Ethics (CIME) Journalists’ Survey

CIME is asking journalists to complete a short survey about the state of media ethics in the United Kingdom (UK). Motivated by the belief that UK journalists should be involved first-hand in designing recommendations for the future of media regulation in their country, the survey (which is also open to journalists anywhere wishing to express their opinion), the survey centres around the Leveson Inquiry: an investigation into the regulation of the UK press that began after the scandal which closed the pages of Murdoch’s «News of the World». The inquiry will inspect 3 areas: the relationship of the press with the public, the policing of the press, and the influence of politicians on the press. The survey results can be communicated to the Leveson Inquiry at the earliest stage possible.

Published in May 2010 by the Affiliated Network for Social Accountability in Africa (ANSA-Africa), this book is intended for all those actively involved and concerned with the subject of governance and accountability in Africa. 13.     Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Toolkit for Humanitarian Settings
To ensure that sexual and reproductive health interventions put into place both during and after a crisis are responsive to the unique needs of adolescents, this toolkit was created in September 2009 by Save the Children and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) as a guide for humanitarian programme managers and healthcare providers. The toolkit introduces a human and child rights framework, discussing adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) in the context of human rights and legal considerations during emergency situations and how ASRH programmes should be utilised to prevent or address rights violations in such settings. To guide this framework, an intervention matrix is offered for responding to ASRH needs.

14.     Participatory Theatre for Conflict Transformation: Training Manual
by Lena Slachmuijlder and Don Tshibanda
This January 2009 book documents what Search for Common Ground (SFCG) has learned using participatory theatre for conflict transformation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Participatory theatre is an approach in which the actors interact with the public, based on a real problem. Throughout the participatory event, the public participates to adapt, change, or correct a situation, an attitude or a behaviour that is developed during the show. «We believe that dealing with conflict constructively is a skill that can be developed, and participatory theatre is a powerful tool in developing that skill.»
