Vargas Llosa and Latin American Politics

Edited by Juan E. De Castro and Nicholas Birns

Palgrave Macmillan, $59.95

Drawn from a number of literary as well as more politicized perspectives, this compendium features essays from scholars in such diverse countries including Vargas Llosa’s native Peru as well as the United States, France, and Mexico. Vargas Llosa and Latin American Politics is a collection of reviews portraying the benchmarks as well as the inconsistencies and stormy contentions surrounding the Peruvian novelist. Vargas Llosa, winner of the 2010 Nobel Prize for Literature, is one of the world’s most celebrated writers of the last fifty years.

This collection has been edited and critically annotated by New School faculty member and professor Juan E. De Castro and his New School colleague and Council on Hemispheric Affairs Senior Fellow, Prof. Nicholas Birns. Mario Vargas Llosa has been a contentious figure for decades, with his maverick political typology transforming him into a hugely controversial figure. His orientation has proved polarizing and has made him the foe of socialist and populist thinking in his own country, as well as abroad. This book provides masterful insights as well as a highly informed scrutiny of many of the sources for his provocative political thought.
