Europe’s cinema goes global: 40 international film cooperation projects benefit from EU support of EUR 5 million
(18 September 2009) Today, the European Commission announced EUR 5 million of funding for 2009 to strengthen cultural and commercial relations between Europe’s film industry and film-makers of third countries. The EU funding will enable European film makers, animators and other audiovisual professionals to learn new skills, and promote the industry, by cooperating with professionals outside Europe, and vice-versa.

State aid: Commission adopts Guidelines for broadband networks
(17 September 2009) The European Commission has adopted Guidelines on the application of EC Treaty state aid rules to the public funding of broadband networks. The Guidelines provide a clear and predictable framework for stakeholders and will help Member States to accelerate and extend broadband deployment. The Guidelines also contain specific provisions concerning the deployment of Next Generation Access networks, allowing public support to foster investment in this strategic sector without creating undue distortions of competition. The Guidelines take account of comments received during a public consultation.

Improving the Deployment of Innovative Broadband Networks in European Regions
9 October 2009  Brussels, Belgium
ICT is one of the keys to open the Information Society door to Europe’s under-served regions, such as rural and remote areas. The deployment of the most innovative broadband networks can be a competitive advantage for these Regions and effectively contribute to accelerating its economic growth and reducing the digital divide. The event will offer a strategic view on existing opportunities for fast deployment of advanced access infrastructures, particularly broadband and next generation ICT networks. It is addressed to European regional stakeholders from Industry, Academia, and European Institutions, interested in knowing how to formulate appropriate policies, create strategic plans and research, implement innovative agendas, and identify key objectives for regional development.

This workshop aims at identifying and discussing challenges and solutions with respect to enterprise interoperability, both at business and technical level. The workshop promotes the development of a scientific foundation for specifying, analysing and validating interoperability solutions: an architectural framework for addressing interoperability problems from different viewpoints and at different levels of abstraction ; a maturity model to evaluate and rank interoperability solutions with respect to distinguished quality criteria ; a working set of practical solutions and tools that can be applied to interoperability problems to date.

The report «A Green Knowledge Society» is delivered to the Swedish Minister for Communications
(16 September 2009) The report will be a foundation for discussions at a conference taking place on 9 and 10 November, «Visby Agenda – creating impact for an eUnion 2015». The task for the study team has been to identify which ICT policy issues should be included in an ICT policy agenda for Europe to 2015.

Workshop «More women, better jobs and boosting growth»

This gender workshop aims to take stock of the progress made and present new initiatives and actions. Brainstorming sessions are also organised to work on a new agenda for Women in ICT. Commissioner Reding will launch the Directory of Women in ICT, an interactive platform bringing together relevant initiatives and information. The Commissioner will also present the new signatories of The Code of Best Practices for women in ICT. Participation in the Workshop is free of charge but there is a limited number of places.
