Researchers at U Washington and UCSD Test New, Free Laptop Tracking System
A new and free open source system from researchers at the University of Washington and the University of California, San Diego promises to track down the location of a lost or stolen laptop without requiring the use of a proprietary or central service.
Infinity Learning Uses Amazon Web Services, Takes Moodle to the Cloud
Infinity Learning Solutions (ILS) said it has used the Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform to develop a cloud computing solution for the open source learning management system Moodle.
Research in Motion Issues Fix for Blackberry PDF Bug
Research in Motion Ltd., maker of the popular BlackBerry handset, on Friday issued a patch to plug a vulnerability in its BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) solution. The vulnerability could allow hackers to enter into a network via a maliciously crafted PDF file.
Drexel U Upgrades to Aruba 802.11n Wireless Network
Drexel University has begun deploying an Aruba Networks 802.11n wireless network at its Philadelphia campus. Drexel is replacing its second-generation wireless LAN to gain the improvements in speed and range brought by 802.11n.
Cloud Computing To Bring Security App Shift, Report Says
Microsoft’s Chief Architect Ray Ozzie dubbed it a «Web-catalyzed services transformation,» and some say the sky will be the limit for cloud computing in the enterprise. However, there still will be a strong need for information security — even in the clouds. A new Gartner Inc. research report, released on Tuesday, predicts growth in the online security application industry segment as companies gravitate toward using hosted applications.
University of Minnesota Solar Car Team Begins Cross-country Race
The University of Minnesota Solar Vehicle Project–one of the first teams to meet all the qualifications for racing in the 2008 North American Solar Challenge–hit the road on July 13 in a 2,400-mile race from Texas to Canada that ends July 22. The team will be posting updates throughout the race.
TokBox Offers Free Live Video Talk Functionality
A new plugin called TokBox, from a San Francisco company of the same name and funded by YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim, allows users to talk with each other over live video. A component with a «Push to Talk» button can be added to a social network profile, blog, or personal Webpage. A visitor clicks the button to connect to the host in real time using live video and audio.
Intel Unveils Centrino 2 for Laptops
Intel is publicizing its new Centrino 2 processors, which are currently being integrated into laptop computers by about 250 equipment manufacturers. A number of Intel processor products based on Centrino 2 will be publicly unveiled «within 90 days,» according an announcement issued Tuesday by Intel.
