St. Francis Xavier U Tackles Recruitment with CRM
Nova Scotia’s St. Francis Xavier University is acquiring the Azorus CRM suite after working with the company’s Digital Recruit system for the last year. With Digital Recruit, students at recruiting events fill out a special form with a digital pen that captures the information being written. Recruiters then upload the data stored on the pen to the CRM system, which initiates a communication plan for the student, including an automatic welcome e-mail message.
New U Arizona Prefetching Scheme Saves Computing Time, Energy
Most desktop computers today, when not in use, power down their hard drives to save energy. While this may be very green, it also incurs minor, though sometimes frustrating, delays. Waiting up to eight seconds for a hard drive to power back up to fetch some document is not the best use of any office worker’s time. So two University of Arizona researchers have sussed out a way to save energy and keep data coming quickly, through a concept they call context-aware prefetching.
U of Technology Sydney and Agilent Establish Metallomics Facility
The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has partnered with Agilent Technologies, which produces analytical instrumentation, to establish a research facility to study trace metals and other elements in tissue, and their effects on health.
Spring Gets Expanded Java Annotation Support
When writing a complex Java program filled with many interlocking objects, any automation of routine tasks can be a big help. So Java developers using the Java Spring framework should welcome recent additional support for annotations, which could take care of many mundane construction and configuration duties. Spring is an open source collection of components for developing Java Enterprise Edition-based applications.
Research Center for PlayStation 3 Processor Gains Continued Support at Georgia Tech
The Georgia Tech College of Computing said that sponsors for one of its research centers have renewed their support. Sony, Toshiba, and IBM initially funded the STI Center of Competence with $320,000 in 2006 to do research into further uses for a new type of microprocessor that initially appeared in Sony’s PlayStation 3 game console.
Microsoft Remedies Windows Server Update Glitch
Microsoft Thursday confirmed public reports of a distribution glitch preventing patch uploading in certain implementations of Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) programs and it also provided a solution to the problem.
Carnegie Mellon Partners with Lulu.com for New Publishing Imprint
The Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is partnering with self-publishing firm Lulu.com to launch a new academic publishing imprint called ETC Press. All publications will be released under a Creative Commons license and will also have associated Web sites for collaborative authorship and discussion.
Going Green or Hoarding Green?
Organizations have the desire to reduce their impact on the environment but lack the will to pay a premium for cleaner operations, according to a cross-sector survey released recently by IT hosting solutions provider Rackspace.
Microsoft Says SQL Server 2008 To Ship This Quarter
After some speculation that the final release of SQL Server 2008 may slip yet another quarter, Microsoft said its next-generation database is on pace to ship in the third quarter.
