Microsoft Mends Breach in Open Source Sandcastle
Microsoft has released all of the source code used in its Sandcastle project, which is now published at the CodePlex open source developer’s Web site, according to a blog. Sandcastle helps developers of managed class libraries create uniform documentation on their projects, using MSDN style.
Stanford, IFL Introducing $50 Handheld to Mexico Students
Stanford University School of Education and Innovations for Learning, a Chicago-based nonprofit, have entered into a social entrepreneurship collaboration to bring the $50 Teachermate Handheld Computer to extremely underserved children in Latin America.
‘Important’ Fixes To Come in Microsoft’s July Patch Cycle
IT pros will come back from the holiday weekend to face a possible four patches in Microsoft’s July patch rollout, according an advance announcement issued by the company. The patches, arriving Tuesday, won’t contain «critical» or «moderate» items, but all four will be deemed «important.»
Tougher Security Planned for Internet Explorer 8
In the wake of a report suggesting that Microsoft’s Internet Explorer was the least secure of all leading Web browsers, Redmond Wednesday touted the security features expected to appear in IE 8. The company is promising nothing less than «comprehensive protection» with IE 8’s new features.
Moraine Valley CC Revamps Administrative Systems
Moraine Valley Community College in Illinois has selected Datatel Colleague and ActiveCampus Portal software to replace a legacy administration system. A committee consisting of campus-wide representatives chose Datatel after an 18-month evaluation of administrative software systems.
The Quilt Coalition Rolls Out XO Communications for High-Capacity Network Services
The Quilt, a coalition of 28 regional network organizations, has added XO Communications Services to its authorized vendor list. The Quilt represents 200 universities and thousands of other educational institutions across the United States. With this new relationship, Quilt members can purchase XO’s high-speed IP transit and network transport services at competitive rates.
Cognos Releases BI Software for Linux-based IBM System z Mainframe
Cognos, which IBM acquired in January, has released an update to its business intelligence software that will run on the Linux operating system on IBM System z mainframes. IBM Cognos 8 BI was being developed by the two companies prior to the acquisition, but assimilation of Cognos into IBM accelerated development.
Vernier Offers Free Software, Plays with Legos, Goes Green For Education
Data collection technology provider Vernier Software & Technology has announced several new offerings for the education market, including free Logger Lite and LabQuest Emulator software, a new NXT sensor adapter for Lego Mindstorms NXT robots, and free eco-friendly classroom activities.
