Lyon’s 1:1 Laptop Program Aims To ‘Level the Playing Field’ for Students
This fall Lyon College, a four-year liberal arts school in Arkansas, will join the elite ranks of post-secondary institutions offering laptops to all incoming freshmen. The program is part of a larger initiative, called «The Lyon Experience,» which aims to bring «additional value to the education» the school provides. How can a small college roll out such an ambitious technology program? It’s all a question of priorities, according to Lyon College President Walter Roettger.

Windows XP’s Death Is for Real, Microsoft Rep Explains
Microsoft is really serious about this Monday, June 30, being the end date for selling Windows XP licenses with new computers — so serious that Senior Vice President Bill Veghte wrote a letter clarifying some of the details.
Temple To Deploy Wireless LAN Across 8 Campuses in Philly
Temple University, with 34,000 students, has begun deploying a new wireless network with equipment from Meru Networks that by the end of 2008 will cover all eight of its campuses in the greater Philadelphia area. About 900 Meru wireless access points (APs) will be installed over the course of the project, offering a combination of IEEE 802.11a/b/g access and newer high-speed 802.11n technology–and in some locations replacing wired networking altogether.
Adobe Releases Acrobat 9, Creative Suite 3.3
Adobe has now released Acrobat 9, announced earlier this month, along with an updated Creative Suite (version 3.3), which incorporates Acrobat 9 Pro software. The new version expands functionality for students in the areas of collaboration and the creation of electronic portfolios.
Microsoft Open XML Converter Arrives for Mac
Microsoft has released Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.0, a file translator that allows users to open, edit, and convert Open XML files created in Office 2008 for Mac or Office 2007 for Windows for use in earlier versions of the suite, including Office 2004 11.4 and Office v. X 10.1.9 or later.
Pentaho’s BI Platform Released Under GPL
Pentaho, a maker of open business intelligence (BI) software, is moving away from the Mozilla Public License for its BI product. The company announced this month that Version 2 alpha, as well as subsequent versions of its Pentaho BI platform, will be released under the GNU GPL Version 2 license.
New Bluetooth Patch Fixes XP Security Hole
Microsoft on Thursday announced that it was reissuing a «critical» patch relating to Bluetooth wireless technology that was released last week as part of its June update cycle. The patch addresses how Bluetooth interoperates with Windows components and applications.
New 11.0 openSuSE Linux OS Released
On Thursday, Version 11.0 GM of the openSuSE Linux-based operating system was publicly released. The open source OS, sponsored by Novell, contains «200 new features,» improved installation and packaging, plus a few options for the desktop user interface.
