Seneca Students To Expand Open Source Expertise within Fedora Project
Seneca College will expand the use of open source software in its curriculum through the Fedora Project, a Red Hat-sponsored and community-supported open source collaboration. Seneca College students in the School of Computer Studies will work within the Fedora Project while learning open source development and administration.
HP’s App Security Center Upgraded and Delivered as a Service
Hewlett-Packard may not be the first name that comes to mind when the conversation turns to application security, but since its acquisition of SPI Dynamics last year, HP has increased its investment in research, product enhancements, and new services in the application security area.
17 Virginia Colleges Launch Roam Secure for Emergency Notification
Seventeen Virginia community colleges have signed on to run Roam Secure Alert Network for emergency notification, joining Northern Virginia Community College, which launched its system in August 2007. Through Roam Secure, campus safety employees can send alerts via email, text and voice messaging, and other delivery channels to the campus community.
California Community College Organization Negotiates Financial Aid System for Member Schools
The Foundation for California Community Colleges signed a five-year blanket purchase agreement with Regent Education to provide the 109 institutions consisting of more than 2.6 million students a way to implement Regent Enterprise.
Live@edu Integrates Exchange Labs
Microsoft’s Live@edu, a suite of online tools focused specifically toward education, has now been expanded to include Exchange Labs, which is similar to a hosted Exchange service but with prototype features that are not yet available to the general public. The move brings expanded e-mail options to campus IT departments, including 10 GB of space per account, as free added features.
Georgia State Pilots Incident Response System
Georgia State University in Atlanta is piloting a new incident response system from Risk Mitigation Systems. FIRSTResponder provides planning and two-way voice, text, and e-mail communications response.
College Students Prefer Online Banking to Paper Checks
According to a new survey of 1,547 college students nationwide, debit cards and online tools are the backbone of students’ money management. Eleven percent reported they have never been to a physical bank to make a transaction. Seven out of 10 prefer to use a debit card when making a purchase. Only 16 percent are likely or very likely to use a credit card.
