IBM Partners with UCLA, NC State on Web Development

In an effort to promote expertise in Web 2.0 application development among the next generation of IT professionals, IBM has teamed up with two universities–University of California, Los Angeles and North Carolina State University–to provide support for academic programs teaching programming using open technologies like Groovy and Java in conjunction with Eclipse and Ruby on Rails. IBM also said it will be providing its previously announced Lotus Mashups software free to the academic community later this year.

NC State Signs Agreement with Utilities To Develop New Tech Transport

North Carolina State University has partnered with Duke Energy Corp. and Progress Energy to establish a center on campus to develop new technologies for plug-in hybrid and other energy-efficient transportation.

eCopy Launches Document Management Tools for Education

Software developer eCopy this week debuted a new line of document imaging and management solutions targeted toward education. The line includes three suites designed to automate document workflows, reduce paper waste, and integrate with systems common in colleges, universities, and K-12 schools, including popular multifunction printers and network scanners.

Blackboard Trial Against Desire2Learn in Court

Just a week after higher education software maker Blackboard announced «tremendous» financial results for the year, it is finally facing off in a small-town Texas court against rival Desire2Learn in a patent dispute over e-learning software. Blackboard is seeking $17 million in lost revenue as well as an injunction against the company, which is based in Canada.

Denodo Enhances Data Mashup Platform

Denodo Technologies this week released the latest version of its flagship platform to create enterprise «data mashups.» The Palo Alto, CA-based enterprise software maker is billing the release as «the industry’s only unified data integration platform.»

Sun SPOTs Go Open Source

Recently Sun Microsystems announced that it would open source both the hardware and operating system for Sun SPOTs, its sensor networking product based on Java technology. CT talked with Arshan Poursohi, a staff researcher in the Sun SPOTs lab on Sun’s Menlo Park, CA campus to find out how higher education institutions can incorporate Sun SPOTs in research and instruction.

Sun To Acquire Virtualization Developer

Sun Microsystems yesterday announced plans to purchase German software developer innotek, the maker of VirtualBox, a set of open source x86 virtualization tools for home and enterprise users. The announcement comes less than a month after the signing of Sun’s $1 billion definitive agreement to acquire open source database developer MySQL. Terms of this latest deal have not been disclosed.

University of Illinois Taps Progress Software for Enterprise Messaging

As part of its five-year, $200 million Banner enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation, the University of Illinois said it will deploy Progress SonicMQ to handle enterprise messaging. SonicMQ acts as middleware for transaction messages.
