Human rights group condemns government-instituted ban on media in Kenya
Kenya enters 2008 caught in a whirlwind of turmoil. Over 300 people have died and more than 100,000 have fled from their homes as a result of the mass riots following allegations of vote-rigging in the re-election of Mwai Kibaki on December 27. This weekend, on December 30, the government shut down all live radio and television broadcasts. The ban is still effective as of today. |

Crackdown on media in Georgia raises concerns with upcoming election
Armed police officers ransacked the offices of Imedi TV in November, forcing the station off the air, reported the BBC. The government’s justification was that the station, which was founded by an opposition politician, was broadcasting biased coverage that could incite protesters. As Georgia gets ready for its presidential election this weekend, journalists speak out against the attack on press freedom.

New BIRN book compiles articles by journalism fellows
BIRN Bulgaria’s new book Moving On: Overcoming Barriers to a European Future is a compilation of articles by ten journalists who participated in the 2007 Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence. The book was presented and distributed last month at the Red House Center for Culture and Debate in Sofia. |

South Asian Journalists Association announces fellowship winners
The South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA) and SAJA Group Inc. announced the winners of the 2007-2008 SAJA Reporting Fellowships last month. SAJA awarded four fellowship grants for reporting pieces in India and Sri Lanka. Out of the 25 proposals submitted, four were selected. The articles will be available to news organizations all over the world for free in April 2008.

IJP announces Vietnam-Germany exchange program
The Internationale Journalisten-Programme (IJP) announces its Asia Pacific fellowship with the 2008 German-Vietnamese Program. In this exchange program, five Vietnamese journalists will have the chance to travel to Germany in September/October 2008, and five German journalists will have the chance to travel to Vietnam in October/November 2008. Deadline to apply: January 31, 2008. |

The Rajasthan Patrika Group is now accepting submissions for the 2007 Karpoor Chandra Kulish Award. The competition is open only to teams of print journalists. Teams must have a minimum of three members, including one leader. Deadline: January 31, 2008 at 6:00pm (IST). |
