The Media Ecology Association, an official affiliate organization of NCA, invites submission of competitive individual papers and complete paper session and/or panel discussion proposals addressing critical, methodological, research, and/or theoretical issues in media ecology: the study of the leading or defining role of technology and technique, modes of information, and codes of communication in human affairs (e.g., language and culture, technology and culture, orality and literacy, medium theory, media history, the symbolic structure or grammar of communication media and its implications, etc.); the study of the inter-relationship between media and humanity.

This year’s convention theme, «Embracing Opportunities» is well suited to media ecology. Media ecologists have never shrunk from exploring resonance with thought emanating from a vast array of disciplines. Intellectual opportunities explored have consisted of orality-literacy studies; image-based studies; technologically-oriented studies; cultural studies and linguistics–to name a few–and media ecologists have «embraced,» among others, existentialist, phenomenological, and semiological approaches. As such, papers and panels that retrieve foundational or lesser known theorists or their ideas in the field and apply them in new ways or that scout new figures or new ideas to enrich the heritage of the field or that simply extend existing approaches are especially encouraged. Likewise, papers or panels that explore new opportunities for «locating» the field as a sub-discipline/discipline/meta-discipline, especially as it might be taught and studied, are welcome. Paper and panel
proposals that «embrace opportunities» pertaining to any inter-relationships between technology, culture, consciousness, environment, balance, and/or change are also invited.
