Special Issue: Cross-Cultural Issues in Survey Methodology

Guest Editor: Timothy Johnson, University of Illinois-Chicago

As political, social, and economic issues impact an increasing number of different groups and populations, survey research methodology faces new questions and concerns about comparability. Against this backdrop, Public Opinion Quarterly seeks submissions for a special issue of the journal devoted to cross-cultural concerns in survey methodology. The issue is scheduled to be published in January 2015.

We invite contributions that will help us understand survey methods in different contexts, whether these contexts involve cultures, nation-states, or regions. Topics can include, but are not limited to, examinations of cultural models of survey nonresponse; assessment of measurement comparability in cross-cultural surveys; strategies to optimize methodological rigor and respect for customs, traditions and values emerging in cross-cultural surveys; cross-cultural instrument design and translation; and the conceptualization and measurement of culture.

The deadline for manuscript submissions is Friday, 14 February 2014. To submit a manuscript, please follow the manuscript preparation instructions provided at the journal’s website.  Blinded and unblinded electronic copies of the paper should be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/poq. Submitting authors should clearly state in a cover letter that the manuscript is for consideration in the 2015 special issue on cross-cultural issues in survey methodology. Submissions will be peer reviewed in accord with normal journal practice. Queries about this special issue should be directed to guest editor Timothy Johnson at timj@uic.edu.
