Figure/Ground’s latest scholarly interview is with Yoni Van Den Eede. Dr. Van
Den Eede holds a Master (2002) and a PhD (2012) in Philosophy and Moral
Sciences, both from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB – Free University
of Brussels). From 2008 to 2012 he was affiliated to the Department of
Philosophy and Moral Sciences at the VUB as a Ph.D. fellow of the Research
Foundation – Flanders (FWO). Before that, he worked in the cultural/music
education sector as a communication and project coordinator. He is a member
of the Board of Directors of the Society for Phenomenology and Media, and
of the Editorial Committee of the International Journal of McLuhan Studies.
Last year, Yoni joined the research center iMinds-SMIT at the VUB as a
Senior Researcher. He studies the philosophy of technology, media theory,
and media ecology, with a focus on phenomenological, cultural, and
existential themes. His doctoral dissertation, now published as a
book, synthesizes the work of Marshall McLuhan with diverse approaches in
the contemporary philosophy of technology, in that way
reformulating McLuhan’s ideas in the context of a systematic ‘philosophy of
media,’ that circles around the notion and metaphor of
‘human-technology relationships.’ He is the author of *Amor
Technologiae: Marshall McLuhan as Philosopher of Technology – Toward a
Philosophy of Human-Media Relationships.*
