Current Situation in Media Education in Russia
in the Context of World Tendencies

to be held within the framework of the academic events programme
dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Russian Institute for Cultural Research

(Taganrog, Russia, 7–8 September 2012)

In the 20th century, media education took shape in the world’s leading countries as the specific pedagogical trend; it was aimed at helping the various age audiences to better adapt to the world of media culture, to master the mass media language, to analyse and create media texts, etc. Now, teaching media is integrated in the mother tongue lessons in schools of Canada, Australia, Great Britain, and other countries. The intensive development of media education in many countries was stimulated by the expansion of the American mass media: many media pedagogues have tried and are trying to develop the so-called “critical thinking” of their students in order to help them to resist the influence of the overseas mass culture.

In the modern world, the mass media education is regarded as a tool of personal development with the help and on the basis of the mass communication media in order to develop the culture of communication with media, creative and communicative abilities, critical thinking, skills in the proper perception, interpretation, analysis, assessment, and creation of media texts, to teach various forms of self-expression through media techniques. The media literacy/media competence acquired in the process of media education helps to actively use the potential of the information/communication field of the television, radio, video, cinema, printed press, and the Internet, helps to better understand and use the language of media culture.
