Hoy jueves 21 de julio de 2011, celebramos 100 años del natalicio de Herbert Marshall McLuhan, quien un día como hoy, hace 100 años, nació en Edmonton, Canadá, y murió el 31 de diciembre de 1980.

We are presently in the grip of the largest and grandest renaissance that the world has ever seen. This should come as no surprise. When we use the phrase, «the Renaissance,» we generally mean the renaissance of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Actually The Renaissance was invented in the nineteenth century. Until then, people didn’t think in those terms: we had no word for it. Apparently, it took two and a half centuries for people to recover from that cultural convulsion sufficiently to discover a need for the word.

Marshall McLuhan was one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century and probably the most misunderstood scholar of his time. He has his many fans, who credit him along with Harold Innis of having created the entirely new field or discipline of media ecology as it is called in North America and medium theory, the name it goes by in many parts of Europe. In addition to his fans, admirers and scholars like myself who have tried to extend his work there are still a number of detractors, critics and naysayers.

Durante los años sesenta era común, en las incipientes carreras de comunicación del país, escuchar el nombre de Marshall McLuhan, el profesor canadiense que con sus ideas originales explicaba las implicaciones que tenían los medios de comunicación masiva en la conducta y convivencia humanas. Se hablaba de la aldea global; de los medios de comunicación como extensiones del hombre; de medios cálidos y fríos; se afirmaba que «el medio es el mensaje» y se decía, también, que «el medio es el masaje».
