Preregistration is now open for the Twelfth Annual Convention of the Media Ecology Association, to be held June 23 to 26, 2011, at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, Canada.

 

The theme of this year’s Convention is «Space, Place, and the McLuhan Legacy.» The theme reflects the University of Alberta’s celebrations in 2011 of the birth of the influential scholar and public figure Marshall McLuhan in Edmonton, Canada, on July 21, 1911.

 

Plenaries and Presentations

 

Plenary speakers and panelists include Douglas Barbour, Richard Cavell, Gary Gumpert, Elena Lamberti, Robert Logan, Joshua Meyrowitz, Mark Poster, B.W. Powe, and Mark Wrathall.

 

Special Convention events include:

* Opening reception and official opening of Spaces&Places:VisioningMcLuhan@100, an art exhibit at Latitude 53 Gallery

* Unveiling of Wave, an art and media installation

* Highlands Walking Tour (including a view from the street of the McLuhan birthplace (registration required)

* Film happening, Being In the World, with a Q and A following with Mark Wrathall

* An urban virtual treasure hunt, «QRcodes and Geocaching in downtown Edmonton»

* Double-feature film screening of McLuhan’s Wake (2002) and the NBC documentary The Medium Is the Massage (1967)

Convention Registration

 

The online registration system for the Convention is open. You will need a credit card to register online. Note that you must be a member of MEA in order to present a session at the Convention. The online registration system is here:

Membership Dues and Convention Fees

Note: You must be a member of MEA in order to present a session at the Convention.

 

2011 Membership Dues (CAD$)

* $80 regular membership

* $35 student membership

* $120 sustaining membership (regular membership plus convention preregistration, contact treasurer@media-ecology.org)

* $160 institutional membership (includes one designated convention preregistration, contact treasurer@media-ecology.org)

2011 Convention Fees (CAD$)

* $40 regular member preregistration (early bird)

* $50 regular member onsite registration (after May 15, 2011)

* $30 student member registration

* $100 non-member registration

* $35 non-member student registration

(No difference in early bird and regular/onsite registration for students)

 

Please note that the refund deadline is June 10, 2011. Any requests for refunds after this date will incur a fee of CAD$10.

 

Accommodation for MEA 2011

 

Accommodation is the responsibility of participants. Hotel accommodations and rooms at the university residence are available.

 

We have arranged for the following room rates for MEA registrants staying at Campus Tower Suites Hotel between June 23 to 26, 2011. The block of rooms at this price will be released on May 24, 2011, so you must reserve by then to receive the rates indicated. The rates are in Canadian dollars, per night, based on either singular or double occupancy.
