Europe’s Digital Library doubles in size but also shows EU’s lack of common web copyright solution
(28 August 2009) 4.6 million digitised books, maps, photographs, film clips and newspapers can now be accessed by internet users on Europeana, Europe’s multilingual digital library (www.europeana.eu). The collection of Europeana has more than doubled since it was launched in November 2008 (IP/08/1747). Today the European Commission, in a policy document declared as its target to bring the number of digitised objects to 10 million by 2010. The Commission also opened a public debate on the future challenges for book digitisation in Europe: the potential of the public and private sector to team up and the need to reform Europe’s too fragmented copyright framework.

Call for papers – 25th Annual International Technology and Persons with Disabilities Conference
(27 August 2009) The 25th Annual International Technology and Persons with Disabilities Conference invites submissions of papers for this conference to be held March 22 – 27, 2010 at the San Diego Manchester Grand Hyatt hotel. The «CSUN» conference is the world’s longest-running and largest conference of its kind on the topic of assistive technology and the positive impact on persons with disabilities. The conference draws more than 4,500 persons annually who attend sessions, visit the exhibit halls, and participate in affiliate meetings and informal gatherings. The Call for Papers opened on Monday, August 24, 2009 and will close on Friday, October 16, 2009.

Call for Papers – 5th International Carers Conference: New Frontiers In Caring: 2010 And Beyond
(27 August 2009) The 5th International Carers Conference will focus on four key themes, identified through latest international debate: – Health, Social Care and Well-being Services; – Caring and Employment; – Technology, Design and the Built Environment; – Financial and Legal Planning Products and Services. The conference will bring together the international community of researchers, practitioners and those with an interest in caring to debate critical issues and exchange expertise and experience. Mapping the policy framework from around the world, the conference will explore innovation and seek real solutions to the care crunch. When you submit your abstract, you will be applying to one of these four themes; you will also be asked to indicate whether you wish your contribution to be considered by the Academic or the Policy & Practice Committee. Abstracts, in English, must be submitted between 1 June and 31 December 2009. Abstracts offering contributions based on research and/or policy or practice developments at both national and international levels are welcomed.

2nd EU-Japan Symposium on New Generation Networks and Future Internet

The objective of this event is to explore further exchange and collaboration between the Japanese and European research communities in the area of what is referred to as «New Generation Network (NWGN)» in Japan and «Future Internet (FI)» in Europe. It offers EU and Japanese researchers an opportunity to be updated on their respective research developments. The event is designed to address both industry and academic interests and to provide interested Japanese partners with an opportunity to participate in EU research related to the Future Internet. This event will introduce a broad set of research activities currently running in Japan and under the European 7th Framework Programme for collaborative research.

European eGovernment Awards 2009 finalists announced
(24 August 2009) The European Commission has announced the names of the 52 finalists that are going to compete for the European eGovernment Awards 2009. The Awards ceremony will take place on 19th November in Malmoe (Sweden). The 52 selected projects are managed by public authorities at local, regional or national level from 17 different European countries, providing services locally or cross-border. All projects make a significant contribution to increasing the efficiency of public services in Europe through the use of digital technologies.

Open Days 2009: registration now open

The Open Days are designed to bring together political representatives, decision-makers, experts and practitioners of regional policy as well as stakeholders from the banking and business sectors, civil society organisations, academia, EU institutions and the media to discuss the common challenges facing European regions and cities, and to discuss possible solutions. The event also provides a platform for capacity-building for those involved in implementing EU cohesion policy and in managing EU funds, as well as facilitating cooperation and networking among regions and cities on best practice in regional development. This year the general motto is ‘Global Challenges, European Responses’.

Workshop «Towards a New Ageing Vision: The Contribution of ICT Industry and Businesses»

What is needed to reinvigorate the European Ageing agenda? What are the visions of ICT industry and businesses in the coming decades? How do older people, care organisations and policymakers react to business visions? We live in a world of technology communications, products and services, a world where our work, quality of life, health, and environment are all being transformed by technology. With progressive ageing of the European and worldwide population a new strategic thinking is required in business and beyond. Tackling the needs of an older population means new ways of thinking, social innovation and taking a holistic approach to ageing: at work, at home and in the community. The aim of the workshop is to identify how ICT Industry and businesses are or will be creating a new ageing vision within their own companies, with their products and services.
