“Facing Energy Security in the Americas through Agroenergy Sources” is the topic of the keynote presentation that Roberto Rodrigues, co-president of the Inter-American Ethanol Commission and a former agriculture minister of Brazil, will deliver for the thirtieth conference in the Organization of American States’ (OAS) Lecture Series of the Americas next Tuesday, October 28.

Mr. Rodrigues’ focus on energy security comes amidst preparations for the Fifth Summit of the Americas, to be held in April 2009 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

Tuesday’s lecture will be webcast live from OAS headquarters in Washington, D.C., beginning at 3:00 p.m. Washington Time.

Organized by the OAS Secretariat for External Relations’ Department of International Affairs, the Lecture Series of the Americas was established by the Organization’s Permanent Council to promote democratic principles and values in the countries of the hemisphere. 

Internationally renowned speakers are invited to address key issues such as democracy, human rights, social development, hemispheric security and the fight against poverty. The upcoming conference is possible thanks to financial contributions from Peru’s San Martin de Porres University and the government of the People’s Republic of China.

“Confrontando la Seguridad Energética en las Américas a través de Fuentes Agroenergéticas” será el tema central de la disertación que hará Roberto Rodrigues, copresidente de la Comisión Interamericana de Etanol y ex ministro de Agricultura del Brasil, como principal orador de la 30ª Cátedra de las Américas, de la Organización de los Estados Americanos, el próximo martes 28 de octubre.

El enfoque de Rodrigues sobre la seguridad energética se hará dentro del marco de los preparativos de la Quinta Cumbre de las Américas, a celebrarse en abril de 2009 en Puerto España, Trinidad y Tobago.

La disertación del próximo martes será transmitida en vivo por Internet desde la sede de la OEA, a partir de las 3:00 p.m., hora de Washington.

Organizada por el Departamento de Asuntos Internacionales de la Secretaría de Relaciones Externas de la OEA, la Cátedra de las Américas fue creada por el Consejo Permanente del organismo continental con el fin de promover los principios y valores democráticos en los países del hemisferio.

Reconocidas personalidades son invitadas para disertar sobre temas de la agenda hemisférica, tales como democracia, derechos humanos, desarrollo social, seguridad hemisférica y la lucha contra la pobreza. La próxima Cátedra será realizada gracias a las contribuciones de la Universidad San Martín de Porres del Perú y del gobierno de la República Popular China.
